Taking payment in a Singapore restaurant, café or hawker stall

F&B is high frequency and low ticket, so the thing that costs you is seconds at the counter, not basis points on the rate. What you want is one device that takes a card, a phone and a QR without staff switching between them, and a payment-success signal your team can trust during a lunch rush.

In short

  • Speed at the counter beats the rate. A method that needs a second device costs you queue.
  • A static PayNow sticker is the fake-screenshot problem, and F&B is where it bites hardest.
  • Delivery-platform orders settle from the platform, not through your terminal — expect two reconciliations.
  • Chinese and regional wallets matter wherever tourists eat: Chinatown, Bugis, Marina Bay, the attractions.
  • Multi-outlet operators want the payment-method split per outlet, not one blended number.

The counter problem is seconds, not percentage points

At a $12 average ticket, a rate difference of a few basis points is worth cents per transaction. A queue that moves ten seconds slower per customer during a 90-minute lunch rush is worth considerably more than that, and it is the thing your staff feel.

That makes method coverage on one device the decision, not price. Every time a customer reaches for something the terminal cannot take, someone has to explain, apologise, and reach for a different box — and the queue watches.

A Sunmi P3 takes contactless, chip and insert, magnetic stripe and QR wallets on one unit, prints the receipt, and runs on 4G or Wi-Fi so a flaky shop router does not stop service.

The static QR sticker is an F&B problem specifically

A static PayNow sticker has no amount in it, so the customer types the figure and your staff verify by looking at the customer’s phone. In a restaurant that judgement gets made by whoever is nearest the till, during the busiest twenty minutes of the day, on a screen someone else is holding.

Fake payment-confirmation screens are trivially available, and F&B is the trade where they work best: the food is already eaten, the customer is standing up, and nobody wants a scene over $34. The loss is small each time and it does not show up in any report, because the transaction never existed.

Dynamic PayNow removes the judgement call. The QR is generated per sale and carries the exact amount, and the merchant gets a payment-success notification — your team is reading your own system, not the customer’s screen. It is covered properly in the PayNow guide.

Delivery platforms are a second set of books

Orders from GrabFood, foodpanda or Deliveroo are collected by the platform and paid out by the platform on the platform’s cycle, net of the platform’s commission. None of that touches your card terminal, and no acquirer — including this one — reconciles it for you.

So plan for two sets of numbers: dine-in and takeaway through your merchant account, and delivery through each platform’s own statement. What an acquirer can do is make the first set easy to close — with Uniweb Pay, cards, wallets and Dynamic PayNow settle into one SGD payout in T+1 batches, with each batch and its fees visible in the portal and a daily PDF statement.

The mistake worth avoiding is enabling a separate wallet arrangement beside your card terminal, which turns two sets of books into three.

Where the Chinese and regional wallets actually matter

It depends on where you trade, and it is worth ten minutes of watching rather than guessing. A heartland coffee shop and a restaurant off Chinatown Point see visibly different queues, and the difference is mostly in wallets rather than cards.

If a meaningful share of your covers are visitors, Alipay+, WeChat Pay and UnionPay are the difference between a sale and a shrug. Alipay+ is the cross-border gateway rather than mainland Alipay alone — Ant International publishes that it now connects more than 50 wallets and payment schemes across 220+ markets, so one enablement reaches travellers from well beyond China.

With Uniweb Pay those sit on the same merchant account and the same Sunmi P3 as the card schemes, so a wallet sale is not a separate device, a separate payout or a separate reconciliation.

Several outlets

A group with four outlets does not want one blended number. The merchant portal shows live sales and a GMV trend, the split by payment method, and every outlet in one view; transactions filter by outlet or by method and export to Excel.

That per-outlet method split is the number worth watching in F&B, because it tells you which sites are actually seeing tourist volume — which is usually not where the owner assumes it is.

Questions merchants ask

What is the best payment terminal for a restaurant in Singapore?

The one that takes every method your queue reaches for on a single device, so staff never switch boxes mid-transaction. In practice that means contactless, chip and insert, magnetic stripe and QR wallets on one unit, with receipt printing and a mobile data fallback. Uniweb Pay supplies a Sunmi P3.

Can I take WeChat Pay and Alipay at a hawker stall?

Yes, through a licensed acquirer — you do not contract with the wallets yourself. What matters at a stall is that the QR is dynamic rather than a printed sticker, so the amount is carried in the code and you get a payment-success notification instead of checking a customer’s screen.

Do delivery-platform orders come through my card terminal?

No. Delivery platforms collect from the customer and pay you out on their own cycle net of their commission, entirely outside your merchant account. Expect to reconcile dine-in and delivery separately.

How quickly do I get paid?

With Uniweb Pay, in T+1 batches in Singapore dollars, with each batch and its fees shown in the merchant portal and a daily statement available as PDF. Cards, wallets and Dynamic PayNow all settle into the same payout.
