# Beneficial owner

The natural person who ultimately owns or controls a business, as opposed to a holding company named on the registration. Identification for every beneficial owner is a standard requirement, and a missing one is among the most common reasons a merchant account application stalls.

## Why it matters to a merchant

The question that stalls the most applications, and it is almost never about the person — it is about the paper trail reaching them. A holding company in another jurisdiction, a nominee arrangement or a shareholder who has moved is enough to turn a day into a fortnight. Working out who the answer is, and what evidence exists for it, before the form asks is the whole trick.
